Quotations Do Not Make Humor

I’ve noticed a disturbing trend as of late:

More and more frequently, otherwise witty people, myself included, are reduced to making pop culture quotations, instead of coming up with quips of their own.

In fact, sometimes, when I say something absurd, I’ve been asked where it’s from.  (Only my own twisted imaginations.  And sometimes I quote myself.  Where does self-referentialism fall into all of this?)

Anyway, the ability to cite the Simpsons, or Futurama, or Family Guy, or Aqua Teen Hunger Force, or Arrested Development, or what have you, in any situation, does not make you funny.  It makes you a heel.  Come up with your own damn jokes once in a while.

  1. Victor Lane says:

It’s sometimes a “look how cool I am” quotation. In the sense of, I’m so cool, I can quote obscure Monty Python skits and you’re then cooler if you can get the reference.
